Never before released in America, the 2002 ambient self-titled side project of Sopor Aeternus, NENIA C’ALLADHAN is now available. Side-stepping the flamboyant gothic darkwave revelry that has become Aeternus’s trademark, NENIA C’ALLADHAN is actually an album of medieval-themed traditional European folk music that makes ample use of atmospheric instrumentation including hammered dulcimer, an assortment of woodwinds, and harpsichord. A tranquil hybrid of fairy tales and troubadour-like storytelling, the album is reminiscent of what Rammstein would sound like without the use of electric instruments. Sung entirely in German, the album is an entrancing entry in Sopor Aeternus’s eclectic musical catalogue.
