JAMISON
There is nothing more vulnerable than revealing yourself to the world. When I took on the quest to record my first record, I was torn between my heart as a drummer and my heart as a singer. At first, it was my thought to record as a drummer and offer my voice on a few tracks. As time passed, I started to hear more of my voice within my sound.
My voice is the sound of my soul and my upbringing. Growing up as a pastor’s kid in church, I was surrounded by great singers. I was drenched in music throughout my childhood. It is no secret that those days were pivotal and gave me a sense of passion and basic understanding of the power in music.
The drummer in me loves to swim in an ocean full of little motifs that can be orchestrated into songs. I love the art of supporting and making soulful suggestions. My intense study of the Jazz greats enhances and, I hope, brings a technical sophistication to my approach.
Many ask me, “Are you a drummer who sings or a singer who plays drums?” This journey of incorporating my voice with my drumming has allowed me to find my unique offering. It wasn’t forced or suggested. It was organic and honest. This record is my answer to that question.
From the roots of a sanctified upbringing comes my voice. With the edification of the jazz lineage and its nuances comes my drumming. Through the spirit and culture of America’s oldest art form, I found my sound. I found Jamison.
