Schuricht was a venerable figure among German conductors of the mid-20th Century, though his recorded legacy is relatively unknown today. That is unfortunate, since he was a remarkably perceptive conductor, worthy to be placed alongside the greatest of his generation. He favored straightforward, clear-headed interpretations entirely without artifice or glamor-mongering. His conductorial manner was, in a word, gentlemanly. Whether the composer be Baroque, Classical, Romantic or Modern, Schuricht ensures that the music is set forth with utter naturalness. Some critics have complained of a certain dourness, and I can see their point. If you're looking for visceral excitement or monumentality, these qualities are generally absent in a Schuricht performance. Instead, you will find a certain intimacy of expression that makes it seem as if the music is speaking directly to you, the listener. This cherishable set from Scribendum contains the bulk of the studio recordings Schuricht made in the early stereo era for the "Concert Hall" label, with several European orchestras which he led or guest-conducted during this period.
