Wing Vilma's trademark sound stems from their feverish curiosity and a cultivated, intentional connection with the natural world that empowers them to find musical ideas in places others may not. Sourcing fresh sonic ingredients from the world around them and blending experimental field recordings with their one-of-a-kind synth-craft to design robust and dynamic soundscapes that explore the rudimentary elements of rhythm, frequency, and tone.
Wing Vilma is a name Miles Coleman has been using since 2017, and has become a major part of their persona since its inception. First captured on the 2018 album Safe By Night, the Grand Rapids-born artist creates music by harvesting found sound from real areas of the Michigan landscape and crafting percussive sequences along with melodic textures.
Their forthcoming album, aptly titled Spirit Practice, is a major step forward and is set for an August 13th release on Young Heavy Souls. It's a multi-layered chronicle of transformation and self-discovery told through a collection of meticulously crafted songs, each as technically fastidious as it is evocative and stirring.
“Spirit Practice'' is a response to Wing Vilma," Miles describes. "It was the process of crafting as these songs that helped me to see my authentic self and come out as Trans and Non-Binary. Each song is a reflection of my love for the natural world, community learning, intimate partnerships and patience— all of which informed my understanding of my trans identity.”
By tapping into these new sounds through their unique journey of self-discovery, Wing Vilma pushes the very boundaries of what electronic music can be.
