Philadelphia-born drummer/composer Ari Hoenig has been a key figure on the New York scene for almost twenty years. A prolific bandleader known for his weekly gig at Small's in Greenwich Village, and a visionary in the areas of metric modulation and melodic drumming, he's also played in the bands of Joshua Redman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Kenny Werner, Chris Potter, Wayne Krantz, Richard Bona and Mike Stern, and appeared on over two hundred recordings. On The Pauper & The Magician, his eighth album as a leader, Hoenig explores the link between storytelling and jazz by creating a soundtrack to the improvised and sometimes twisted stories he tells his two small children. Featuring his working band of Gilad Hekselman (guitar), Tivon Pennicott (tenor saxophone), Shai Maestro (piano) and Orlando le Fleming (bass), the album comprises six compositions based on the tale of a powerful, dark sorcerer who in a moment of weakness and boredom passes on his book of evil magic to a pauper. Each chapter is outlined in brief in the liner notes and the album will be accompanied by a two-part short film, available online from January 8th 2016.
