The second chapter in 4 To The Floor’s expedition to planet Classic, ‘4 To The Floor presents Classic Music Company Volume 2’ takes off where Volume 1 landed, spotlighting sublime new music from the label while charting more key releases from the label’s (nearly 25-year) history.
Born from the friendship between Luke Solomon and Derrick Carter, Classic is an eclectic clan which began in 1994 as a vinyl imprint, retreating briefly before coming back stronger, wonkier and with extended family in tow. Cherished members of that extended family Eli Escobar and Honey Dijon feature multiple times on Volume 2; Eli with two tracks from his recent critically acclaimed album ‘Shout’, including an exclusive new remix from Luke Solomon of ‘Handz Up’, and a re-do of the label classic ‘JAS’ by Tim Deluxe. Taken from her debut artist album on Classic, Honey’s ‘808 State Of Mind’ featuring Shaun J. Wright & Alinka perfectly demonstrates her tough but sweet New York-meets-Berlin sound. More recent releases feature from Folamour, Cratebug (with an exclusive ‘Synth Mix’ of his acidic pumper ‘Melondrop’), Chrissy, label head Luke Solomon and the incredible gospel house anthem ‘Calling Out’ from Sophie Lloyd featuring Dames Brown that sent eager fans wild with its original 7” release.
Highlights from the archives include one of Classic’s very first singles, ‘Untitled #2’ by Awoke, an outstanding bloopy gem, the first ever release by cult underground artist Nail called ‘Sim City’ and Rob Mello featuring Stella ‘Critical’ (Bunkin’ School Dub Mix), one of the last releases from Classic in its original phase and a wickedly overlooked record. Finally, the compilation wouldn’t be complete without an appearance from label co-founder Derrick Carter, his characteristically leftfield remix of Chicago indie rock band Kill Hannah’s ‘Kennedy’. And there are more lightbulb moments of musical discovery from one of the UK’s most consistently surprising labels.
