"Light In / Light Out" is the much-anticipated debut album from insanely young indie folk band Mortal Tides. They draw inspiration from far afield: Bob Dylan, Dry the River, The Low Anthem, Nick Cave, Thom Yorke, James Brown, Charles Mingus, Lúnasa... to produce a heavy, insistent folk-rock sound which is beyond their years. Yet, despite their youth, there's mileage clocked up through gigging, especially at festivals. All are multi-instrumentalists: lead singer Noah Bevington and drummer George Brignal, whose rhythmic intuition form the foundations of this band's impressively solid, hypnotic sound, are enhanced by fiddle and harmonies from younger brother Jed and upright bass from Fergus Quill, creating a seductive, compelling combination. With "Light In / Light Out", Mortal Tides prove they are ahead of their years yet startlingly contemporary in style, and capable of unearthing raw creativity at its very finest.
