There's a law about diminishing returns which broadly states that volume three of anything isn't going to provide the kind of significant jolts which accompanied volumes one and two. When it comes to rockabilly, the artists on our previous compilations of US Decca, Brunswick and Coral tracks (BCD 15623 and BCD 15733) didn't just sing the standards, they set them.
But while there's not a great deal here to compare with Johnny Carroll, Roy Hall or Buddy Covelle, most of the tracks can still reach across the years and fire listeners with a certain excitement.
We have, incidentally, included records from Kapp and it's subsidiary, Trend, because these labels were later absorbed into the U.S. Decca group. Coincidentally, Dave Kapp, who founded Kapp in 1954, had handled Decca's country division before World War II.
Although the definition of rockabilly becomes increasingly stretched in its application, we've tried not to show an incorrigible disregard for the conventions of the music. I can envisage punters listening to Billy Jack Hale and hissing "It's country" but, in choice collecting circles, Your Eyes has been described as "Fantastic and very rare Johnny Horton style Rockabilly."
This, then, is an enthusiast's package full of rockabillies, hillbillies and rarefied floppabillies. Twenty-seven no less....so we've got to get a move on.
