Groupe vocal américain féminin actif de 1946 à 1963, The Chordettes voit le jour à Sheboygan dans le Wisconsin et comprend quatre camarades de classe Janet Ertel, Alice Mae Buschmann remplacée par sa belle-soeur Carol Buschmann, Dorothy Schwartz et Jinny Osborn. En 1949, une prestation à la radio lance le groupe qui obtient son plus grand succès en 1954 avec sa version de « Mr. Sandman », qui se classe en tête du hit-parade avant de nombreuses reprises à venir et inaugure une série de tubes, comprenant notamment « Eddie My Love » et « Born to Be with You » (1956), « Just Between You and Me » (1957) et « Lollipop » (1958), Célèbre pour ses harmonies vocales mélodiques et contrastées, The Chordettes enregistre quatre albums pour la firme Columbia avant de signer avec le label Cadence et symbolise la vague des groupes vocaux de l'après-guerre, avant que le style pop ne tombe en désuétude et soit remplacé par le doo-wop. Quelques changements interviennent au sein du quartette, lorsque Dorothy Schwartz et Jinny Olson sont enceintes et remplacées par Lynn Evans et Margie Needham, puis lorsque Janet Ertel se marie et cède sa place à Nancy Overton (ex-Heathertones). En 1961, la formation obtient son dernier grand succès avec le titre « Never on Sunday », inclus dans un album homonyme consacré aux chansons de films. Après leur séparation, les chanteuses se reconvertissent dans d'autres activités. Janet Ertel, qui a épousé l'orchestrateur de leurs chansons Archie Bleyer, donne naissance à Jackie, qui se mariera avec Phil Everly, du duo The Everly Brothers. Par la suite se succèdent les décès: Alice Mae Buschmann (1981), Janet Ertel (1988), Jinny Osborn (2003), Nancy Overton (2009), Dorothy Schwartz (2016) et Lynn Evans (2020).
