The Gothic Archies project was formed by Stephin Merritt, a member of the infamous team The Magnetic Fields and projects such as The 6ths and Future Bible Heroes. Merritt himself calls "The Gothic Archies" "a gothic bubblegum orchestra"
However, the really popular "gothic bubblegum orchestra" became at the beginning of the century, when, for several years, the entire cycle of Lemony Snicket's novellas 33 Misfortunes was published in separate audiobooks: Lemony Snicket asked his old friend Merritt to write one song for each book in the cycle, and to fulfill them. (By the way, Daniel Handler (real name of the writer hiding under the pseudonym Lemony Snicket) played the accordion during the recording of the monumental album "69 Love Songs" by The Magnetic Fields, released in 1999 on three CDs. Since then, Merrit and Handler and remain friends)
In 2006, this soundtrack was released as a standalone album by The Gothic Archies, and was titled The Tragic Treasury: Songs from a Series of Unfortunate Events. In addition to songs from the audiobook, the album also contains two bonus tracks.
