Piano – Stanley Cowell
Trumpet, Producer, Liner Notes – Charles Tolliver

Charles Tolliver is one of the underrated heroes of jazz trumpet. It is rare to find a quartet recording led by a trumpet player. It is rarer to find a jazz recording of such high energy or focus. This was recorded live at the legendary Slug's Saloon. The rest of the quartet is Stanley Cowell on piano, Cecil McBee, bass and Jimmy Hopps on drums. This is challenging, no holds barred straight ahead music.
All compositons are by members of the group.
Although not readily available now, it is a priceless addition to any jazz lovers collection.
To hear a Tolliver quartet recording with an even higher intensity, see my review of "Grand Max" with a completly different rhythm section of pianist, John Hicks, bassist Reggie Workman, and superb drummer Alvin Queen. Some jazz reviewers believe the Stanley Cowell led group contained on this recording is the best. I believe the "Grand Max " group is superior. This is all a matter of taste, so whichever recording you get, you will be experiencing 1970's jazz at it's most authentic.
