In 1973 Big Jim, who has spent nearly all of his banjo-pickin' years living in Tucson, Arizona, got a Ph.D. in cultural anthropology with a minor in art history'. He is one of a cadre of bright young college students in the United States who have gotten a handle on old time country music and who can pick and toe-tap with the best of the old timers, some ol whom never got out of grade school Big Jim's banjo has been heard in solo and as back-up in liddle contests and folk festivals from San Diego to the mall in front of the Smithsonian Institution He and his wife, Loma. are in charge of organizing "Tucson. Meet Yourself," Arizona's largest annual ethnic folk festival
