Tamás was born in Budapest in 1936 but lived in Switzerland from 1956 onwards. His piano concerto was written in 1965 and is in the tradition of Bartók. The highly virtuosic piano part is contrasted by a full orchestra playing in tightly woven counterpoint. The work was never heard in the composer’s lifetime and this is a live recording of its premiere.
