Though this set does not include Borodin's lovely string quartets, it contains more than enough to please the most ardent Borodin enthusiast. The symphonies are so well played that no other versions I've heard can compare. One assessment of Borodin's music I once read made reference to his "latent muscularity". The timing and pace of the symphonies does complete justice to that quality. Also very apparent in these works is the orchestral brightness unique to the man's work. Even though I love all the great music, I find that too much Mozart, for example, can become tiring. Borodin never wears thin, perhaps because there's so much air and space and breadth in all his work. And everything he wrote is suffused with a delicate beauty that speaks volumes about the value of hanging out with your best musical friends in dogged determination to forge a new style without the "benefit" of formal education.
Borodin was blessed with a rare and sweet genius, and he will continue to bestow that on those who are lucky enough to love him and his work.
