"Perhaps my art is the art of a madman, a sparkling mercury, a blue soul that bursts over my pictures."
This quote from Marc Chagall's autobiography "My Life" is the starting point for the new composition "At the easel" by Noriko Kawakami, which she wrote in 2004 at the ZKM | Hertz-Labor (at that time ZKM | Institute for Music and Acoustics). She used this text as the sound material for her playback tape, as well as saxophone sounds such as flap and air noises and played notes. The work for two saxophones and four loudspeakers is her first attempt to put loudspeaker and instrumentalist on an equal footing.
»At the easel« was created as part of a guest artist residency of Noriko Kawakami at the ZKM | Hertz Laboratory (ZKM | Institute for Music and Acoustics) and was premiered on May 13, 2005 as part of the concert "At the easel - saxophone and electronics" in the ZKM's cube.
