Illustrated Musical Encyclopedia is aptly named: Sakamoto here offers up an incredibly diverse range of sounds, spanning the whole distance from solid mid-80s synthpop to colourful experimental flights of fancy, with extensive doses of smooth jazz on the side. Good use is made of a range of different vocalists, though Sakamoto also knows when to let an instrumental speak for itself. Interesting, but perhaps a little bland. The title is somewhat appropriate, because much like reading an encyclopedia, this album introduces you to a whole bunch of different subjects without really getting passionate about any of them.
