Inclassable violoncelliste-star Matt Haimovitz (* 1970) : après une première décennie comme soliste sur la grande scène internationale, et comme artiste de la DGG où il entra dès l’âge de dix-sept ans, il décida de s’éloigner de ce monde trop formaté pour explorer d’autres répertoires – jazz, rock, pop, folk, crossover… – et d’autres lieux de concert : bars, cafés, clubs underground, restaurants, petites salles paumées à la campagne, pour y apporter les Suites de Bach et autres grands monuments à un public moins standardisé. Depuis 1999, son propre label discographique propose des œuvres différentes, des artistes moins marketés, et des visions inhabituelles du répertoire. C’est dans cet esprit quasiment frondeur qu’il nous offre l’intégralité des sonates et variations de Beethoven pour violoncelle et piano, ici jouées sur un pianoforte Thomas Broadwood de 1823, un modèle similaire à celui que le facteur offrit à Beethoven en 1817. Sonorités boisées de part et d’autre, pour une lecture hardie et beethovenienne, sans affectation ampoulée, de ces sublimes sonates.
