McCarthy formed in 1985 in Barking, Essex, England and consisted of Gary Baker on drums, Malcolm Eden on guitar and vocals, Tim Gane on lead guitar, John Williamson on bass, and, toward the very end of the group's run, Laetitia Sadier on backup vocals.

By 1990, when front man Malcolm Eden decided to put the band to rest, they had released three records and several EPs. Malcolm went on to form Herzfeld, and after pursuing his new band for a few years, retired from the music business altogether. Tim and Laetitia went on to form Stereolab.
