London-based band Masakichi are set to release their debut mini album ‘Hummingbird’ on September 18th, 2015 on Fierce Panda Records. Made up of seven tracks, this essentially alternative rock album has a modest spaced-out vibe. Occasionally many of the tracks can appear drum heavy, however the album features the return of the “wall of sound” and that unique shoegazing sound.
Members Hannah Cartwright (vocalist), Reuben Gotto (guitarist), and Hattie Williams (bassist) have made an incredibly bold statement with this EP and created a highly individual sound for a band founded little over a year ago. The trio have already released the video for their track ‘Spring’, a haunting and dark depiction of defiance.
Guitarist Reuben has spent the last few years travelling with bands such as Foals, Maccabees and Alt-J who incidentally created a remix of the final track on the album ‘Spring’. By all accounts ‘Spring’ and ‘Hummingbird’ have to be the most identifiable tracks. ‘Hummingbird’, the title track from the EP features agonising vocals building in intensity until the climactic finale.
Reuben’s old band mate Ben Calvert was roped in for drums for the 6 core tracks of the album, alongside Rich Wilkinson and Larry Hibbitt. Since the trio recorded the album last year they have been engaged in the London live music scene.
Their unusual name Masakichi comes from a famous artist during the 1800s who believed he was dying of TB, who later created a life size statue of himself. A great story of great devotion turning to insanity as he completed the work by inserting his own hair into the exact same positions on the statue… yes, everywhere.
‘Hummingbird’ is a great debut album bleeding with honesty and pain with a fierce message of conquering ones demons. The band members combined experience has enabled them to create a solid sound with carefully constructed lyrics delivered by the beautifully chilling vocals of Hannah Cartwright.
