Jack Biilmann - Full Circle (2021)

Growing up meandering amongst the waves in the quaint coast town of Pambula Beach, singer/songwriter Jack Biilmann was never parched for writing inspiration or fuel for his wanderlust. The now Canberra-based Aussie has been long surfing over the radar as one of the rising blues and roots musicians from ‘the Land Down Under’, earmarked for his candid nature, thought-provoking story telling and willingness to confront the delicacy of sorrow – (check out “Forever Unbeaten” from 2017) – a stirring tribute to prodigious Australian cricketer Phil Hughes.

His third LP Full Circle revolves around this passionate and heart on your sleeve approach with the occasional top dips into folk, country and soul for liberal measure. Biilmann’s love for music stems from listening to the John Butler Trio and he admits of a “total dream come true” with Mike Barker (former John Butler Trio sticksman) providing drums and percussion on the album.

Beginning in reflective mood with “Mirror”, Biilmann ponders ‘If I had my time again’ before the glass smashes into smithereens with a burly chorus. “Grandfather’s Hands (Don’t Wash Away)” is a wistful flow that drifts beautifully, yet still gushes in defiance. “The Devils Got A Bed” is worth avoiding an afternoon siesta for with its dash of Americana and catchy handclaps.

“SOS” brings a country rock vibe to proceedings, which is then followed by first single “Legacy” – a deep, brooding seethe with rugged, soaring vocals that explores the space and meaning we leave behind after our time is up. “Plastic Roses” blossoms with rich melodic guitar tones and the heartfelt bursts continue into “Sunday Morning” – the first real nod to electric blues with a sharp hit of expressive licks.

Throughout Full Circle, Biilman showcases a real sense of songwriting craft and confidence with an authentic blues/roots element at the center of the sphere. With its diverse and meaningful repertoire, many fans will argue this is his most complete record to date. But like his previous two records, Biilmann simply knows how to shed realness that resonates with the listener in the most tender way possible. ~Breton Towler
