Giovanni Battista Somis (1686-1763) may be to many of us, an unknown and obscure Baroque composer, but his work is as outstanding and marvelous as any other's.
Very little is known about this great composer; we know that he was born in the northern city of Turin, Italy (at the time, the capital of the Savoy kingdom), into a musical family of mainly violinists; Somis traveled and lived in Rome to study under no other than Arcangelo Corelli, and this is very evident in Somis' style and in the beauty of his work. It's also known that years later, and because of the proximity to France, Somis became the violin teacher of Jean Marie Eclair, Guillemain and of Pugnani among many others.
Somis' style blended perfectly the traditional and virtuoso Italian style, with the refined French cadenzas.
This Opus 1 was published in 1717 in Amsterdam, the capital of all Baroque publishers at the time, and it was dedicated to Ma. Giovanna Battista, duchess of Savoy.
If you are unaware of this terrific Italian composer, listen to the samples, and get you a CD; I'm certain you're going to love it like many of us do.
