The music of Boot Hill, which in one short year has become familiar to many through their appearance at clubs and festivals throughout the Southeast, is now captured on their first album, “Steel Rails.” Boot Hill consists of five parts: Sam Sanger, Louisa Branscomb, Steve Block, Gary Brown, and a love of bluegrass.
Sam Sanger, who plays guitar and does most of the lead singing, has a background in classical music and Jazz, having performed with chamber groups, the Richmond Symphony, and his own jazz band. Sam got his start in bluegrass with The Hanky Mountain Express of Staunton, Va. In addition to his musical role, Sam is the M.C. for the group, providing a vibrant link between Boot Hill and the audience.
Louisa Branscomb began her musical career with writing her own songs, but found that performing was the best way to give her music exposure. While playing guitar with several bands, including perhaps the first all- female group, Bluegrass Liberation, she found it difficult to keep a committed banjo player, so in 1974 she decided to learn banjo. You'll be glad she did.
In the summer of 1976 Sam and Louisa gave up their regular careers (Sam in adult education, Louisa in Biomedical Communication) to devote themselves full time to bluegrass. They also handle P.R., bookings, and the rest of the band business.
Steve Block, orginally from Suffem, N.Y, plays bass, sings lead, and sings bass on quartets. Steve's lead bass work is a special feature of Boot Hill's live performances. Steve played bass with several bands in the N.Y. and Minn. area, including the Middle Spunk Creek Boys, before coming south to join Boot Hill.
Gary Brown, mandolin player, lead and baritone singer, grew up with bluegrass, being taken to bluegrass festivals and conventions by his parents, both ardent bluegrass fans. In fact, Gary is still growing up with bluegrass. Listen to the album and try to convince yourself that Gary has just turned sixteen.
Also heard on the album is the fine fiddle work of Buddy Spicher and Joe Stuart, both well known to bluegrass fans.
The album contains a collection of songs almost as diverse as the group itself, including bluegrass, gospel, country, and a barbershop quartet. These are interlaced with five of Louisa’s ongmnals, which show her potential as a bluegrass and country writer.
On “Steel Rails” Boot Hill shows their respect for the spirit and tradition of bluegrass, while presenting the music in their own very personal way. The result is a pleasant harmony of veneration and vitality, and a sound that will soon be famihar to all lovers of bluegrass. Russell Shelton
