John Bull Band - In Black & White (2013)

These veteran players channel their sound from an era in American music that began about the time Little Walter first “electrified” his harmonica with a cheap dispatchers mic and tube amp, and ended about the time B.B. King recorded “Thrill is Gone”. While they mine their material from sources as diverse as Hank Williams and Nat King Cole (also from Montgomery), the sound never strays far from the blues.
John Bull - singer/harp player, once captained his own riverboat in Montgomery, Al. He hired the best local and regional blues players to entertain, and ran a Sunday evening "Blues Cruise". John learned much sitting-in with these accomplished veterans, including his current guitarist, Sheffield Walker. Over the years John formed his own bands, eventually selling the riverboat and focusing on music. These days John is a local favorite and tours throughout the southeast. While he no longer owns Montgomery's riverboat, John still plays the "Blues Cruise" on most Sunday evenings, as he has for more than twenty years.
Sheffield Walker - guitarist, was seventeen years old when he played on legendary harp player Slim Harpo’s 1968 album “Tip on in”. This is just one of many significant pieces of Sheffield's long musical history, but you’d be hard pressed to get him to speak at all about his past - he lets his playing do the talking, and it speaks loud and clear of decades spent honing his skills in southern juke joints. Sheffield is a bonafide blues guitar hero to even the best area guitarists who know and appreciate the gut–wrenching emotion and technical mastery of his playing, yet he’s relatively unknown to casual music fans; He's an authentic, undiscovered blues treasure.
Dr. Phillip “Pete” Terrell - bassist, has a Ph.D. in Music Industry Studies and teaches Audio Recording Technology at Alabama State University in Montgomery. His musical history is diverse, having played with Ray Charles and toured with Steppenwolf, and recording for Kay Tel records in the early ‘70’s.
Harold "Jukebox" Robinson - drummer, has been a member of the U.S. Navy band, has a M.M. in Jazz performance from the University of Miami, and has performed with Stevie Wonder, Ben Vareen, Grammy award winning saxophonist Kirk Whalum, and Howard Hewett of Debarge, among many others.
When these veteran players combine their talent and experience to breathe new life into old blues and traditionally-inspired originals, the results are sometimes surprising, always inspiring, and never to be missed.
