At home, writing lyrics of mountain tops with him on top, Eddie Vedder has his arms raised in a V. The triumph is all Vedder’s, but the mountains belong to the lead character of Sean Penn’s directorial feature Into the Wild for which the Pearl Jam front man has recorded a solo record. The soundtrack, to be released Sept. 18, features 11 jams Vedder scored for what Sean penned (see what we did there?).
Based on the best selling book by Jon Krakauer, Into the Wild follows the true story of college graduate Christopher McCandless (played by Emile Hirsch), who abandons his possessions, gives his life savings to charity and hitchhikes to Alaska to live in the wilderness. No word yet on whether Vedder has found a better man.
If that weren’t enough to prove Vedder’s vitality (vitalogy?), he’s also set to appear in the Judd Apatow-produced faux biopic, Walk Hard - The Dewey Cox Story. Vedder’s rumored to be making a cameo as a certain scruffy, intense, musician with piercing eyes (so, himself) who presents a lifetime achievement award to the legend Dewey Cox—a quasi Johnny Cash character responsible for such hits as the protest song “Ladies First,” the disco tune “Hey, Hey, Who Wants to Party?” and the Billboard smash “There’s a Hole in My Pants,” not to mention the title track. The film, to be released December 14, stars John C. Reilly and features cameos by Paul Rudd as John Lennon and White Stripe Jack White as Elvis.
Vedder is also set to contribute two songs to the documentary Body of War as well as a Bob Dylan cover to the soundtrack for I’m Not There, the Todd Haynes helmed biopic (release date TBA). The I’m Not There soundtrack will reportedly be available Oct. 30 and feature covers by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, Willie Nelson, Yeah Yeah Yeahs' Karen O, Cat Power, Yo La Tengo, Stephen Malkmus, Iron & Wine, The Hold Steady and Jack Johnson.
