personnel :
David Liebman – soprano- & tenor saxophone, wooden flute
Although Dave Liebman had recorded a few unaccompanied saxophone records before, The Distance Runner was his first live CD in that format. Switching between soprano, tenor, and wooden flute, Liebman is mostly heard in a thoughtful and lyrical mood, improvising on his open originals and creating respectful versions of Sidney Bechet's "Petite Fleur" and John Coltrane's "Peace on Earth." His playing is logical and, although there are intense and passionate moments, the music is often melodic. Although one would not often recommend unaccompanied saxophone recitals to casual listeners, Dave Liebman's outing is surprisingly accessible and well worth exploring.~Scott Yanow
