Strauss’ Violin Sonata in E flat has a surging opening movement with operatic leanings with a melting subject announced on the piano, and immediately taken up by the violin. Rachmaninov’s Cello Sonata in G minor gives the limited cello/piano repertoire one of its most popular and imposing works. Played by Zhislin in a beguiling transcription for viola by Vadim Borisovsky.
