Here is a very eclectic and original program performed by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra conducted by Hiroyuki Iwaki. Along with the main course Petrushka is included the rarely performed ballet Agon. Originally created in collaboration with the choreographer George Balanchine, it is a fascinating example of Stravinsky’s late conversion to the dodecaphonic technique, and a shining example of the composer’s ability to get to grips with a wide variety of musical languages. The album also includes Fireworks, an irresistible youth masterpiece dedicated to Stravinsky’s master Rimsky-Korsakov.
