Bruch, Strauss and Busoni—one would think that the works of such famous composers have all appeared on recordings. There are still a number of gaps, however, which come to light time and again. These three violin concertos are absent or only weakly represented in current recording catalogs; one can rightly speak of them as discoveries. Bruch’s Second Violin Concerto, although much more interesting than his Concerto in G Minor, has long remained in its shadow.
Busoni’s Violin Concerto is one of the most daring and demanding works from this genre from the end of the 19th century. The brilliant, sanguine concerto written by Strauss in his youth combines many beautiful characteristics of the traditional concerto with his own innovative spirit. Add to the alluring combination of these three concertos a brilliant, young German violinist, Ingolf Turban, an orchestra of highest standards, the Bamberger, and an Israeli conductor with a profound understanding of late Romantic music, Lior Shambadal, and you have the makings for an exceptional production.
