In this, the last of the classic MPS Tremble Kids recordings, the kids play a savory mix of time-honored New Orleans pieces, swing and popular evergreens. There's nothing sluggish in the band's spirited rendition of Hoagy Carmichael's "Lazy River", whereas the popular standard "Sweet Sue" is taken at the luxuriously relaxed pace of lovers on a stroll.
The Kids have a surprise up their sleeves on Ellington's usually languorous "Mood Indigo", taking it at an infectious up-tempo. They stamp their own imprint on Spencer Williams' "I've Found A New Baby", as the Kids implant a modern vamp into this vintage piece from the Big Easy. The evergreen "I Want A Little Girl" is an infectious example that "traditional" does not necessarily mean "out of date".
"St. James' Infirmary" begins in the necessary solemn processional manner before taking off into a clarinet-drum duo that harkens back to Goodman-Krupa, ending in a rousing ensemble chorus. The 1906 Tin Pan Alley song "Chinatown" later became a "hot jazz" favorite.
The Kids treat the piece with a loving nostalgia before moving on to a bright rendition of Carmichael's "New Orleans". Instead of playing the 1918 ODJB mega-hit, Tiger Rag at its usual frenetic pace, the band takes its foot off the pedal, as they coast, ensemble-style, at a leisurely pace down the road. Another Williams jazz staple, "Royal Garden Blues" has the Kids strutting off into the sunset. No wonder they call this "hot jazz"; it’s a hell of a lot of fun.
