There has been a lot of “rap” about the Memphis Sound. I'm speaking unofficially, of course, but I wonder how many music, jazz or blues fans or just plain listeners, If you please, know that it all started with BILL BLACK'S COMBO.
I don’t mean, or adhere to the theory, that Memphis was the BIRTH OF THE BLUES. Certainly there were the bright lights and the “good-time houses" of Beale Street, and you must take into consideration the venerable W. C. Handy. But it all came up the river from New Crleans, picking up on the way the various differentiated sounds of both black and the white musicians that learned rather than copied their style.
BILL BLACK'S COMBO was built on this orientation, but times have changed, and the original shuffling, rhythmic patterns have changed with their approach to today’s audience.
The studio in Memphis that Bill Black built still maintains the basic sound, but the tunes you hear on this album will attest to the group's aggressiveness toward the new element. Let's face it, even “soul food" has changed, and in change there has to be a new identifi- cation, Thus, the basic sound and the wonderful ideas for this new album by BILL BLACK'S COMBO.
“Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head" is a tender group of tunes designed to keep you “cool and dry" in- side while weather conditions are rather inclement on the outside. The title tune is rather traditional, but when you move into One Five One Eight Chelsea (the studio's address, incidentally) you can hear the bended notes and sustained chords of the "Delta guitar,” so characterized by those fraternal boxmen who emigrated from East Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas to spread their sounds.
Put a Little Love in Your Heart, Sweet Inspiration, A Brand New Me are all known standards by this time, but have been handled in the Bill Black vein.
I’ll have to confess even with the horns and “wah wah” amplification, Spinning Wheel is my favorite track. Maybe my ear has deserted me, but this seems to get back to the classic Bill Black sound. It happens again on The Proud Cherokee. Bill was a member of that proud tribe. The pulsing gyrations of the tenor man and the simplicity of the organ embrace and sustain the original sounds of the Combo. The same thing holds true of Rated "X,” dedicated to all "exotics," and possibly you didn’t know it, but those lovely “strippers” use Bill Black's arrangements and/or records for background music more than any other musical aggregation.
There is a certain magic to the sound of BILL BLACK'S COMBO, Today, with the enthusiasm for larger sounds and more background, Bill Black only grabs you a little more . . . and, man, let those RAINDROPS KEEP FALLIN!
