The occasional contribution made by Alexandre Dossin to this on-going release—now reaching the Fifty-seventh edition, has been characterised by its refinement.
Writing in the programme notes, he relates “I have been interested in Liszt’s transcriptions of his own songs for several years, and it is with great enthusiasm that I share this recording with a worldwide audience”. Liszt composed around eighty songs at various times over fifty years of his life, and as the years passed by he transcribed them for solo piano. These he then converted into two books, calling them Buch der Lieder (Book of Lieder). The first was first published in 1843, but the second was only released in 1985. Each contains 6 songs, the first book were all settings of poems by Goethe, Heine and Boccellla, and opening with one of his most dramatic and oft performed songs, Die Loreley, to words by Heine. Liszt was to set it again, that second version also transcribed for piano and included as an adjunct to the First Book, Dossin perfectly judging mood changes that are required in the extended Mignon’s Lied. The Second Book was dedicated to the poetry of Victor Hugo and is essentially in lyrical mode and perfectly realised by Dossin. Though again he brings great beauty to the series, he is also in totally command of the stormy virtuoso passage we find in Enfant, si j’etais roi and the final Gastibelza. The disc is completed by the three short Geharnischte Lieder, originally for male a capella choir, the third displaying military connections. The sound is unremarkable in quality, but I strongly commend these performances to you. © 2021 David’s Review Corner
