Rhythm-and-blues is what's happening in the music world. Check the charts, the deejays, the jukeboxes - the big demand is for the big sounds, the big beat and Sou. Sound, beat and soul are the trade- marks of the Soul Finders, an all-star combo that has a genuine feel for this music and the talent (correction: genius) to play it to per- fection.
Rhythm-and-blues - a fusion of jazz, gospel and rock - carries its own message, and each of the ten selections here brings the mes- sage home...straight, strong and direct. Some are the sensational best sellers at the top of today’s charts, Others, like Raindrops and Why Don’t You Do Right, are R & B standards that established the field.
Sweet Soul Music, the title song, in a current blockbuster that sets the contemporary scene. Respect, The Happening (The Supremes are doing things with this movie theme) and Dead End Street (a Lou Rawls special) are as new as Twiggy.
The collection includes outstanding hits introduced by some of the big names in the business: Tomorrow Night (Damita Jo), Oh How I Need You Joe (Dinah Shore) and Passion Flower. (Johnny Hodges thrilled the jazz world with this composition by the late Billy Stray- horn.)
Soul American is an original from the pen of Bert DeCoteaux who arranged and conducted the entire album. Bert's a qualified musician who's written and arranged many an R&B hit. His demands are reflected in the personnel of the Soul Finders. The band's line-up reads like a “Who's Who" of today's most sought-after instrumentalists: drums - Bernard Purdie, fender bass - Charles Rainey, guitar - Eric Gale, tenor and alto sax - Seldon Powell, baritone sax - Buddy Lucas, tenor sax and piccolo - Zane Paul Zacharoff, trumpets - Ernest Royal and James Sedler, piano/organ - Paul Griffin and George Butcher.
The swinging vocal trio consists of Ella Winston, Valerie Simpson and Lesley Miller.
The musicians are right, the tunes are choice, the enjoyment is yours.
