Liam James Tulpa - Confusion Is The First Step Towards (2021)

There is a philosophy that within the universe a relationship exists between chaos and order, or chaos and the cosmos. Everything thing that is created comes from that chaos and is brought into order through certain thoughts, relationships, processes and actions. Perhaps from the unconscious into the conscious.

At the beginning of the Covid lockdown period I purchased a small handmade artwork canvas with a Chinese symbol that apparently represents Chaos is the First Step Towards Clarity. I probably had no idea how relevant that statement would be to my own state over the months that followed, and perhaps the months that had came before. In a time where our whole internal world would shift from one state to the next, day by day we all lived within that chaos. Each of us individually and collectively try to bring that into order. These times and experiences acted as the overarching theme of this album.

A few weeks into that lockdown period I lost all drive for creativity and slipped into that internal chaos for long periods of time. In that period I decided to start recording sections of audio to tape machines from the internet. This included YouTube, Facebook Live and a number of other random locations. Everything from musical excerpts to speeches and commentaries. These 3 90-minute cassettes ended up being the source material that would be destroyed, torn apart, broken into pieces and assembled back into order in the form this album.
