With "Lunaris", Stegmann and Jiménez have created a new sound world beyond conventions and style dictates and beyond the guidelines of historically informed performance practice. The internationally renowned specialists for early music design programs in which they play out their original habitat in a fascinating way and at the same time limit it experimentally.
With "Lunaris", their debut album as a duo, the virtuosos musically stage the phases of the moon, traversing 750 years of music and cultural history. Always there, yet unreachably distant, the nightly light casts a spell over people. It is believed to influence our behaviour and emotions, which is why Stegmann and Jiménez associate certain human expressions and moods as well as music with each figure of the moon.
With various recorders, violin and fiddle, the duo has recorded four sets that correspond to the phases of the moon, combining highly diverse spheres of sound. The four phases of the moon, in turn, merge seamlessly into one another through electronic soundscapes that Jiménez composed for "Lunaris".
Computer sounds, anonymous works from the 13th and 14th centuries, original compositions by Berio and Ysaye as well as adaptations of selected works by Bartók and Merula merge into a fascinating whole. Under the sign of the moon, a single sound space is created in which historical differences are meaningless and the music flows out of only one time: our present.
