Despite a number of their albums topping this debut, it remains a
remarkable document of ambition, arrogance, bombast and sheer
bloody-mindedness. Declaring they would deliver a double album, sell
millions and then split up, the desired length wasn’t quite supported by
the material, but that’s not to say ‘You Love Us’, ‘Little Baby Nothing’
and ‘Stay Beautiful’ don’t still sound glorious. Add in near-perfect single
‘Motorcycle Emptiness’ and there’s much to love. Indeed, there’s now even
more seeking your affections, with ragged, frenzied demos aplenty and a
fabulously thorough documentary, in which James and Nicky demonstrate that
none of the passion of youth has faded.
