Evgeny Mravinsky became a leading proselytizer for the music of Dmitri Shostakovich during his tenure in Saint Petersburg. During much of that period his co-principal conductor was Kurt Sanderling. Sanderling was a special interpreter of Shostakovich in his own right, but it wasn’t until he moved to East Germany that his views started being recorded for posterity. On first hearing his approach my seem a little under-powered, but upon closer listening what makes his readings special is his ability to project the long musical line. A much under-rated conductor, Kurt Sanderling.
