Leclair was to France in the Baroque period as Corelli was to Italy. Though they produced few works of music, the quality of their instrumentals has stood the test of time and is still enjoyed by listeners over 250 years later. This is a nice CD to have on while you are reading or studying. The London Baroque does a fine job of preserving both the sacred and secular feeling of the music as the CD alternates between Overture and Sonata. From the back cover:
"Brilliant transcriptions of his formidable sonatas for solo violin and of opera overtures arranged for trio, the six pieces of Leclair's Opus 13 were regarded as a major artistic event. On their appearance in 1753 the highly respectable "Mercure de France" was unstinting in its praises of the "new works" by the "most celebrated artist France has ever had in purely instrumental music".
