We are pleased to announce the fifth instalment on IDS from Fly From Venus.

In November 2020, Liam Eshghi-Luck- also known as Fly From Venus- astounded the IDS Music team with his 10-track debut offering “Interlude”. Originating from the small town of Penzance, his cornish counterparts are reflected through a plethora of atmospheric, sonic intricacies, while he doesn’t fall short of demonstrating true emotional complexity, packaged in what is quite simply a beautifully-crafted collection of underground dance music.

On his debut release, the artist draws simultaneously from the piano-focused musicality of his Cornwall upbringing, and from more recent explorations into the world of sound art. These outlooks complement rather than oppose on a thoughtful and often meditative set of tracks, melodically considered yet texturally rich.

While the compositional and sonic qualities have clear roots in more academic settings, the release arguably sits best alongside the likes of Actress and Jon Hopkins, with low-end rhythmics often grounding the more disparate experiments, with tracks like Murt seemingly purpose-built for both headphones and club sound systems.

Elsewhere, the harp work on 4 Harps Pt. 1 and 2 recalls the celestial qualities of Four Tet, and the woozy, wistful melodies of N5 recall the sweeter corners of the Aphex Twin catalogue. Importantly, the club-ready framework and the structural complexities work in harmony, adaptable to the desires of the listener. Neither aspect alienates – its warmth and familiarity is welcoming, and its creative liberties urge for repeat listens. Perhaps the most prominent of these choices is the extensive use of manipulated field recordings throughout the record, allowing the tracks to build and sprawl beyond the usual parameters of club music, and solidifying the overall identity of the project.

Across both the visual material of the album, and extending into future live excursions, Fly From Venus will appear obscured by a purpose-built helmet. In part this acts as a measured detachment between project and individual, allowing the work to exist within its own space. Likewise, it is an understanding that perhaps the best way to remove yourself from a project is to fully immerse yourself within its world.
