Every singing star eventually records an album of songs from Broadway musical productions. There is hardly anything new about this. Indeed, in John Gary's case, great tunes from the repertoire of America's musical theater have been featured in almost every one of the fourteen albums John has recorded for RCA Victor up to this writing.
But this is the first time John has done an album made up completely of exceptional songs from Broadway shows. John selected these, not so much on the basis of whether or not the shows themselves were outstanding hits, but purely on the basis of how deeply he felt about the songs. As a matter of fact, record albums are generally prepared so far in advance of their release dates that, in the cases of the newer shows represented herein such as “How Now, Dow Jones," “The Happy Time," “Golden Rainbow" and “Henry, Sweet Henry," the shows hadn't even opened when John recorded the songs.
John and his RCA Victor colleagues all hoped that the shows would be unqualified hits; but in the final analysis, it is not very important whether they are or not. In an earlier album, for example. Once Upon a Time from “All American" is one of the loveliest songs John ever recorded. Indeed, it is the favorite of many of his fans, even though the musical was far from successful.
The songs in this album were selected, as are all songs in all John Gary albums, by John with loving care, and are performed as only he can perform them. We think you will find that, in total, they make as thrilling, heartwarming and satisfying an album as any of John's other packages.
Perhaps the title of this album may turn out to be prophetic. You may one day see John Gary on Broadway. In summer stock recently, at the Star-light Theater in Kansas City, John played George Novak, the male lead in “She Loves Me." This is what Kansas City's number one critic, Bob Friskel of the Kansan, said:
"John Gary's acting was sure and relaxed and he displayed no traces of first-night uncertainty. He has the good looks required of a leading man and his voice has never been a question. There seems no reason why he couldn’t handle a Broadway role as easily as he handles a recording session."
And then I vividly remember sitting in the sixth row of the otherwise unoccupied Alvin Theater on Broadway with David Merrick, possibly the most flamboyantly successful producer in the theater's history. On the stage, with an actress, John Gary read the Starbuck part from “110 in the Shade." “That boy is a natural actor," said Merrick. “I'll have him on Broadway one of these days."
We will see. But in the meantime, enjoy John singing some of the loveliest and most exciting songs, old and new, ever written for the American musical theater.
