The turn from the 19th to the 20th century is characterized by numerous upheavals in socio-political, socio-historical and artistic terms. In the musical sector, too, there are decisive new developments, while the old ideals will continue to be cultivated for a long time. The result is a fascinating stylistic juxtaposition in the tension between Romanticism, Modernism, Impressionism and National Schools, and this diversity is also evident in the selection of choral works from large parts of Europe, which the Vienna Chamber Choir presents on this new CD in sensitive, powerful interpretations . At the beginning, Aleksandr Scriabin's hymn to art, written exactly in 1900, is prefixed as a motto - an a cappella arrangement of the final choir from his first symphony. This is followed by an impressive combination of highlights such as Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy's Trois chansons, Max Reger's Abendlied or Hubert Parry's My Soul, There is a Country and newly discovered jewels such as the haunting Nuku (sleep), composed tragically far too early the deceased Finn Toivo Kuula, or the gripping Drei Gesänge op. 19 by the Czech composer Josef Suk.
