Q.E.D. consists of two works composed for electric guitar and a small orchestra. The five movement title work (the initials stand for "Quod erat demonstrandum") utilizes fourteen players in addition to Rypdal and his guitar. First performed in 1991 at the Molde Jazz Festival, the contrasting movements offer sections for some improvisation (which the composer also refers to as "guided freedom"). The second movement in particular shows how effectively Rypdal brings to bear both the formalized notation of classical music and the explorations on a theme of a jazz soloist. The sixteen minute piece "Largo" blends the electric guitar with a small string ensemble. The entire album was conducted by Christian Egger, who's worked with Rypdal on many of his important projects, including two which followed this one, IF MOUNTAINS COULD SING and SKYWARD (on which he put down his baton to play piano and keyboards).
