For those who read Les Oreilles Curieuses, I had spoken at length about Brooklyn's indie rock scene, which is multiplying as it goes. And in particular a rather sensational but far too little known trio named Haybaby. If they haven't been giving much news in recent months, it's because the band members are recharging their batteries. Except one who has decided to go solo and it is bassist Sam Yield who presents his first album called Terra Australis.
As you might expect, Sam Yield won't be continuing the sludge-grunge sound he made with his two other Haybaby buddies. Listening to Terra Australis, we realize that the bassist has decided to open the doors to his secret garden which is strewn with existential questions throughout these thirteen moving and thrilling ballads.
Sam Yield's frail voice and his acoustic fingerpicking game will suffice for the bucolic magic to operate from the first notes of "Julie" who opens the enchanting ball. Entirely written, composed, produced, arranged, recorded and mixed by himself, we will let ourselves be carried away by this poetry with multiple references to Hebrew writings as well as to Greek philosophy to establish a parallel to his life ranging from "This Must Be "To" I Noticed "via" Heraclitus "," A Winter Country "and" Jubilee ".
We can also mention the folk pearls of "Something Else", "Cooper Park" and the finale entitled "It’s Good To Stand In The Minor Light" which show the compositional talents of Sam Yield. Even if he does not revolutionize the genre, the bassist from Haybaby surprises us and invites us to let go for the time of introspection.
