Born in South-Korea and at the age of two adopted into a Dutch family, Lavinia Meijer started to play the harp at the age of nine. Within two years she was admissioned to study at the young talent class of the conservatory of Utrecht (Bachelor) and later at the conservatory of Amsterdam (Master). At both conservatories she graduated with Honours. Her success at the conservatory of Amsterdam was a prelude on Lavinia’s career to come.
Soon after her graduation Lavinia received the Borletti-Buitoni Trust (London, 2006). In 2007 Lavinia was heralded as the “Rising Star” musician of her generation. She performed solo-recitals at concert halls like Musikverein (Vienna), Carnegie Hall (New York), Philharmonie (Köln), Jerusalem Theater, Seoul Arts Center, Royal Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), Cité-de-la-Musique (Paris), Konzerthus (Stockholm), and Symphony Hall (Birmingham, UK).
Philip Glass is one of the most influential composers of the 20th century. He is the first composer to win a wide, multi-generational audience not only in the opera house and the concert hall, but also in the dance world, in film and in popular music simultaneously. Philip Glass studied in europe under conductor Nadia Boulanger and sitar musician Ravi Shankar, whom Glass cited as a major influence on his craft. He is known as an American Minimalist, writing pulsating rhythms and repetitive, slowly changing harmonies with long, overarching tunes. His memoir Words Without Music shows a fascinating chronicle of a life spent pursuing the absolute freedom of musical expression. Philip Glass will once more encounter with harpist Lavinia Meijer for a collaboration to his 80th birthday.
