First the bad news: Rubinstein’s last Beethoven concerto cycle, with conductor Daniel Barenboim, is his least impressive. Mind you, it’s not bad, but he was well past his prime and it shows–less in the occasional dropped note than in the lack of forceful accents and spontaneity in the phrasing. Rubinstein’s later Brahms concerto recordings, with Leinsdorf and Ormandy, on the other hand, are still quite good. His Chopin concertos and Rachmaninov Second (Ormandy) and Paganini Rhapsody (Reiner), have always been acclaimed, particularly the Rhapsody, for both soloist and conductor.
The later Nights in the Gardens of Spain and Saint-Saëns Second Piano Concerto, both with Ormandy, remain very impressive. The Saint-Saëns was a Rubinstein specialty, and no one inflected the central movement’s second theme with such an infectious bounce–and those Philadelphia cellos are drop-dead gorgeous. Franck’s Symphonic Variations are out of fashion today, but it’s a great work and this is possibly its finest recorded performance. Rubinstein’s Tchaikovsky Concerto with Leinsdorf is a class act from start to finish, as is his Schumann Concerto with Giulini.
Szymanowski’s Symphony No. 4 (Sinfonia concertante) was composed for Rubinstein, and it’s a shame he never remade it in stereo, but this still remains a benchmark version in good mono sound. Perhaps the most pleasant surprise will be Rubinstein’s Mozart: Piano Concertos Nos. 17, 20, 21, 23, and 24. Here Rubinstein’s gifts as a chamber music player are evident in the form of some truly delightful interplay between solo and orchestra. Witness the coda of Concerto No. 17 (sample). It may not be “authentic,” but it’s very stylish and consistently enjoyable.
Presumably there will be a Beethoven box in this series that features the Leinsdorf concerto cycle, but aside from this single unfortunate repertory choice, this is a mostly impressive set and a very good deal at budget price. The engineering is variable, understandably, but certainly acceptable.
