Nicolás Pasquet - László Lajtha: Symphonies Nos. 8 & 9 (2000)

Laszlo Lajtha is one of those composers who gradually became better. For example, the fourth symphony is better than the third, which is based on a dour film score for Murder in the Cathedral. The fifth and the sixth are very accessible and entertaining. If you want the best of Lajtha's symphonies, start with the eighth and ninth. I heard the ninth on a broadcast of the Boston Symphony many years ago, and I was impressed. Lajtha was an innovative orchestrator, and the orchestration of the last two symphonies is very impressive.
Not everyone is a Beethoven or a Monet or a Shakespeare, and even Shakespeare has some weak plays, such as Henry the Eighth and Timon of Athens. If you like the best of Honegger and Martinu, you will not be disappointed with Lajtha's last symphonies.
