This album, recorded at a 1998 concert in Munich, finds the pianist/composer at the top of his game, an enviable position to be in after spending as many decades on the jazz frontlines as Peterson has. The fact that seven out of the ten tunes are Peterson originals offers further proof that though he's technically a senior citizen, Peterson shows no signs of coasting on his substantial reputation. He's been recording and performing with bassist Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen for so many years that the two men's interaction verges on the telepathic, Pedersen knowing when to spar with Peterson and when to offer a simple walking line. Guitarist Ulf Wakenius is the most recent addition to Peterson's quartet, and he comports himself admirably in a thoughtful, understated way. The sole non-original "Satin Doll" is one Peterson's recorded before, but as always, he tackles the standard with a very fresh harmonic approach.
