Emilio Benzi is considered one of the greatest exponents of Italian double bass. He was a teacher at the "G. Verdi" Conservatory of Turin, 1st Double Bass of the Turin Philharmonic Orchestra and 1st Double Bass of the RAI Symphony Orchestra of Turin until 1994. He has carried out an intense solo and chamber music activity. , collaborating with some of the most prestigious Italian groups with whom he recorded for American CBS, Philips Eratò, Sony, Frequenz, Bongiovanni, Tirreno and Arts. Several composers have dedicated solo and chamber pieces to him, including: "Hileomi" by Giuseppe Longo for quintet; "Lenz" by Federico Ermirio for double bass and orchestra; "Recalling Rossini", "Chili Suite" and "Verdi and Friends" (all for four double basses) and Domenico Torta's "Concerto for Double Bass and Orchestra". He was the founding President of the National Competition for Young Italian Double Bass Players named after his father, Werther Benzi, established by the "A. Vivaldi" Conservatory of Alessandria. Since 2008, the year of his death, the competition also bears the name of Emilio. He played on an Enrico Cerutti from 1861.
