Sointi Jazz Orchestra - Kolibri (2020)

The new album consists of six compositions written for the band by Rasmus Soini, the artistic director of the Sointi Jazz Orchestra, which have been born over the last four years. The compositions of the hummingbird have drawn inspiration from e.g. urbanization, technological revolution, and the hectic rhythm of life — things alongside which the individual is easily forgotten. SJO's trademarks, rich interchangeable arrangements, meandering immersive compositions and skilful improvisations create a unique big band experience.

The Sointi Jazz Orchestra, formed by young professionals, is an 18-member ensemble formed in the autumn of 2013. The band is known for their personal sound that renews the big band tradition, produced by unusual instrumentation and fresh adaptations utilizing interchangeable instruments. Every year, the band produces new open-minded and surprising concert ensembles, the compositions and arrangements of which are tailored to the Sointi Jazz Orchestra.

The album features Petteri Hietamäki, Sami Leponiemi, Frans Thomsson, Janne Saarinen, Pekka Seppänen, Teemu Mattsson, Tomi Nikku, Tommi Kolunen, Jasmin Afaneh, Hannes Kaukoranta, Mikko Haanpää, Panu Luukkonen, Aaro Huopainen, Kenneth Ojutk, Kenneth Ojutk Joona Räsänen and on the album's one track Visiting Norwegian saxophonist-composer Marius Neset.

The album has been recorded and mixed by Mikko Renfors and mastered by Jaakko Viitalähde. Mikko Renfors and Rasmus Soini are responsible for its production and Juha Koivusalo for the graphic look.
