"Der Name Beethoven ist heilig in der Kunst." Mit diesem Satz hatte Franz Liszt einmal seine überschwängliche Bewunderung für Ludwig van Beethoven zum Ausdruck gebracht. Seine Verehrung spiegelt sich ebenfalls in zahlreichen Klavier-Bearbeitungen von Werken Beethovens wider. Zwischen 1837 und 1863 entstand mit seinen Klavierbearbeitungen der neun Sinfonien Beethovens ein Höhepunkt der Klavierliteratur des 19. Jahrhunderts. Liszt gelang es, den Beethovenschen Geist der Orchestermusik auf das Klavier zu übertragen. Nichts Wichtiges sollte weggelassen, aber auch nichts hinzugefügt werden. Diese einzigartige Beethoven-Huldigung auf Klaviertasten hat der Pianist Hinrich Alpers neu eingespielt. Die Beethoven-Sinfonien in der selbst für Lisztsche Verhältnisse unerhört virtuosen Klavierfassung zu hören. Bei der 9. Sinfonie mit ihrem berühmten Chor-Finale sind ein handverlesenes Vokalquartett mit Christina Landshamer, Daniela Denschlag, André Khamasmie und Hanno Müller-Brachmann sowie dem RIAS Kammerchor unter der Leitung von Justin Doyle zu hören.
