Frequent Traveller is soon set to release the ground-breaking new ‘Real Life’ album which, in a time when opportunities to travel are scarce and many are itching to get away, transports the listener around the world in complete, 360-degree surround sound. Due for release October 9th via the new immersive-focussed Music for Headphones label, ‘Real Life’ is the latest project from electronic producer Steve Spiro, who’s previously worked with the likes of Pet Shop Boys and Talk Talk. Utilising the latest in binaural sound technology which enabled him to record environments and replicate the human ear’s natural awareness of height and depth positioning, Steve travelled around the globe capturing surround-sound field recordings of what he encountered. Able to reproduce those sounds just as the human ear would have heard them at the time, Steve began incorporating them into an eclectic 13-track collection of experimental electronica/dance music.

Talking about the ‘Real Life’ album, Steve says: “Over the last 18 months, I’ve travelled the world and recorded sounds in various locations on the planet. In each of the destinations, I went into the cities, towns and villages and recorded environments and the local inhabitants. Passing through crowds of people, in fleeting moments of time, I captured the drama, comedy and sometimes the irony of real life as it unfolded. A cast of thousands shape the script and scenes.” The songs themselves deal in a diverse pool of influences that, given the global nature of the album, span a far-reaching tapestry of everything from hip-hop, house, dub and experimental electro to hypnotic drones and minimalist, ambient soundscapes.

Following ‘Trains’ and ‘Planes’ which were recorded at London’s Victoria train station and Gatwick airport respectively – airport/cockpit announcements notifying the listener of their destination can be heard throughout the album – ‘A Maze of Snakes and Shadows’ is a roam through the mystical Souks of Marrakech, “where the sound of snake charmers and drummers echo down the cobbled dark ally’s and shadows lurk in the doorways ready to sell you anything from horses to hash.” Then, the bustling hip-hop-infused dance cut ‘In My Head’ charts a late-night subway train through Harlem, NYC complete with the sounds of sirens, old-time buskers, rival gang banter and the dancers pictured on the album artwork.

After ‘Three Bells’ takes us to the small colonial town of Merida in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, ‘The Devil’s Trying To Break Us Down’ sees Steve make his way across Venice Beach boardwalk in LA and stumble across “a crazy collective of militant hate clerics, preaching their Sunday sermon claiming that “The lord created the gay to be destroyed.” There’s a constant presence of police surveillance helicopters from above as they circle the perimeter of the beach.” In comparison to ‘The Brazilian’ which was recorded at the Sao Paulo football stadium on matchday and “the celebratory sounds blaring out from the street bars after the game”, ‘From The Ashes’ is a more mesmerising affair captured at India’s Pushka Ghats: “The backdrop is the gentle river life of the locals who live and work on the riverfront. The track I created for this is a meditative wash of ambient drones and hypnotic chants to compliment the chilled, carefree atmosphere around us”.

Elsewhere, ‘Liquid Sunshine’ takes place in Jamaica and is naturally rooted in the dub and reggae sounds synonymous with the island: “This was one of my favourite locations I recorded in as it’s an Island with lots of noise, energy and full of animated characters saying lots of crazy shit”. This is followed by ‘Deception’ which, unlike the rest of the tracks on the album, was recorded in two different countries and fused together. “The Flamenco foot-stamps and claps were recorded in Barcelona and the choir was recorded in a gospel church in Brighton”, Steve recalls.

Penultimate cut, ‘Les Croisette’, takes place in Cannes during the Lions Advertising Festival (“There’s glitz and glamour with party’s happening on every beach and the constant sound of bar babble, amidst me being propositioned by several ladies of the night whilst on my walkabout”) All before the album draws to a close with ‘Here Inside Me’, an introspective ambient piece recorded at Tate Britain in London: “Having captured the noise and energy of all the locations recorded, around the world, the inspiration for this was to capture the sound of silence. Listening to the gentle murmurs of people as they shuffle around the gallery, we become aware of the space as it’s gentle echoes are heard within the sparse ambient tones of the track.”
